Talking Points: Who is the THA?
The Tasmanian Hospitality Association is the peak industry body for hotels, accommodation, restaurants, cafes & catering and clubs in Tasmania. We represent around 450 hospitality businesses in the state.
What does the THA do?
For the 450 hospitality businesses in Tasmania we represent, we lobby on their behalf, we provide daily assistance to their business through free advice on issues such as Industrial Relations and human resources, we provide advice and assistance on regulatory issues of concern and generally provide a one stop shop for them to come to for any assistance they require.
How big is the industry?
The Hospitality industry in Tasmania employs well over 20,000 people and we make up around 9% of the Tasmanian Workforce. Hospitality is the 3rd largest employing industry in our state with around 2,000 businesses operating at any one time. The Hospitality industry not only services the 1.3 million visitors to our state each year but also look after the half a million people that call Tasmanian their home each and every day and our members and staff help make Tasmania the best place in the world to live.
Is there a government MOU?
The THA does have an MOU with the Tasmanian Government that recognises the THA as the Peak Body for all Hospitality related issues in Tasmania. For our members this means the THA is in constant discussions with the government on issues of concern to industry and the Government relies on the THA to provide advice and information for which the government can then act on for the benefit of the industry and state. The Minister for Hospitality and the THA share the goal of improving the performance and productivity of the hospitality industry and its contribution to Tasmania’s economy. The Government also recognises the THA’s role in ensuring the industry maximises employment and career opportunities and strives to achieve a world-class industry that exceeds customer expectations. Under the MOU, both parties are committed to a strategic approach to industry development and working collaboratively to achieve agreed goals.
Is there a strategic plan?
The THA and State Government agreed to adopt a strategic plan to achieve our shared objectives of a stronger and more prosperous industry. The plan helps the THA to develop initiatives that will improve our hospitality businesses by focusing on our people, productivity, places and partnerships. It also helps inform the work of the THA in providing advocacy concerning the regulatory environment in which our members operate and to inform and advise government of issues of concern that need resolution for our members. As part of our strategic plan, the Government invests $1.5 million in funding over 4 years to help encourage the growth of our sector.
The THA is the only body representing hospitality businesses in Tasmania. We will continue to lobby on our member's behalf, to try to get them the best outcomes for their businesses.
