Public holidays Christmas/new year 2019/2020
Public holidays Christmas/new year 2019/2020
With the upcoming run to the festive season fast approaching it was felt a further gentle reminder on the application of the rates for employees within your organisation necessary. Under the Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (TAS), the public holidays over the Christmas and New Year period and Australia day are as follows:
Wednesday 25 December 2019 – Christmas Day
Thursday 26 December 2019 – Boxing Day
Wednesday 1st January 2020 – New Year’s Day
Monday 27th January 2020 – Australia Day
What does this mean?
1. Christmas Day 2016: All Tasmanians receive a substitute public holiday for Christmas Day
2. Boxing Day: All Tasmanians receive a substitute public holiday for Boxing Day Thursday 26th December 2019, and for staff who work this day then holiday penalties will apply.
3. New Year’s Day: All Tasmanians receive a substitute public holiday for New Year’s Day Wednesday 1st January 2020.
4. Australia Day: All Tasmanians receive a substitute public holiday for Australia Day Monday 27th January 2020.
It is important that employees receive the correct entitlements on these days. The table below outlines briefly the entitlements under the various Awards applied by members for work performed on a public holiday. It should be used as a guide only and members should refer to the Award relevant to their business for the full extent of employee entitlements.
Most permanent staff if normally rostered to work may be entitled to payment for a public holiday even though they do not work it. Members are encouraged to contact the THA if they have any queries in relation to employee entitlements on the public holidays.
