Tasmania’s Liberal Government recognises the Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) as the peak body that represents the hospitality industry in Tasmania. The Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the THA that confirms our commitment to the hospitality industry and sets out our shared intent to maximise employment opportunities, productivity, customer satisfaction and the contribution of the industry to Tasmania’s economy.
The THA and Government have agreed to adopt a strategic approach to achieving our shared objectives and this plan will guide the THA as they develop initiatives that will improve our hospitality businesses by focusing on their people, productivity, places and partnerships. It will also inform the work of the THA in providing advocacy concerning the regulatory environment in which hospitality businesses operate.
In particular, the THA has an important role in workforce development. While our hospitality businesses are vital contributors to our community and rely on locals for much of their trade, they are also on the front line of our tourism industry. The Government, in partnership with industry, has set a specific goal to attract 1.5m visitors to Tasmania by 2020. Our MOU with the THA is intended to help drive job creation and the THA has already launched a number of initiatives that will contribute strongly to this shared objective.
Creating a better understanding of the career opportunities available in hospitality and increasing the appeal of working in the industry will be vital. At the same time, leading the work on skill development and endeavouring to continually lift the bar on our service culture is an important undertaking.
As a membership-based Tasmanian organisation with a proud history dating back over 175 years, the THA have a valuable role in helping to shape our future. The Tasmanian Government is pleased to partner with the THA through our MOU and by the provision of $1.5m in funding over four years that will encourage the growth of the hospitality sector. As Premier, and Minister for Tourism, Hospitality & Events, I look forward to working with the Board and staff of the THA to realise our vision of Tasmania as one of the most hospitable places in the world.

The Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) is recognised by the Tasmanian Government as the peak industry body that represents the hospitality industry in Tasmania. The Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the THA that confirms their commitment to the hospitality industry and shares our intention to provide a unique customer experience and maximise employment opportunities by providing career pathways within our industry.
Since 1839, the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) and Restaurant & Catering Association (RCA) of Tasmania have been working to protect and support the interests of those in the hospitality and tourism industry. In November 2009, these two bodies merged to become the Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) and in 2015, the THA proudly celebrated 175 years of industry service.
The THA comprises of a board of industry professionals and as a result of this direct contact, the THA does actively seek to engage all levels of government including local councils to lobby on behalf of the sector and play a lead role in the formation of industry relevant policies.
The THA is a membership based organisation representing more than 450 venues and includes hotels, restaurants, pubs, clubs, cafes and catering businesses throughout the state making it Tasmania’s third largest industry.
The association is at the cutting edge of promoting Tasmania’s quality food and beverage experiences to visitors and locals alike.
The THA is a proactive body which seeks at all times to advocate for the hospitality sector and to ensure Tasmania has a viable and profitable hospitality industry now and in the future.
The THA provides a range of services to its membership with a focus on full industrial relations support and advice. It provides its members information and up to date industry news, marketing opportunities, membership discounts, training and access to member’s events throughout the year. The THA is actively involved in a workforce development program comprising of the Great Customer Experience. The Great Customer Experience program’s focus is to raise service standards within the tourism and hospitality industry by working with all staff in their venues including management, to touch on points including but not only, staff retention, service training options, creating cultural changes, coaching, mentoring and business profitability to name a few.

THA Awards For Excellence
The THA Awards for Excellence is the highlight of each calendar year that rewards hospitality excellence in Tasmanian hotels, clubs, restaurants and café’s. The event is always extremely successful with high numbers of nominations and over 500 attendees, all celebrating excellence in great tradition.
THA Partners have the opportunity to take part in this gala event which is held each August at Wrest Point Hotel.

THA Race Day / Race Night
Each year the THA hold race meetings in both HOBART and LAUNCESTON. Over 200 industry guests attend each of these events which take place in October and December each year.
The Hobart event is held at Elwick Race Course and is aligned to the Caulfield Cup to enhance the enjoyment of attendees.
Mowbray Race Course is the venue of the Launceston meeting which is held as a Wednesday Night event and attracts race goers from all over Tasmania.
Both meetings attract a large number of state and local government members and is a perfect opportunity to network with politicians and industry participants in a relaxed and extremely friendly environment.
Marketing / Communication
The THA WEBSITE is our source of truth and provides or members with a platform to access all the information they need to run their business. Partner information and links are listed on the website for easy access and maximum exposure.
The HOSPITALITY REVIEW is the association’s bi-monthly electronic magazine that is a highly valued product distributed by the THA. Our Corporate Partners are listed as a corporate supplier in the magazine and receive a copy of each issue throughout the year. It is also available in a digital format. Based on the level of sponsorship, corporate partners are also able to supply material for advertising.
SMALL BYTES is our weekly e-newsletter. Corporate Partners can provide company information or offers for inclusion into this publication at any time. THA BULLETINS are regularly sent to THA members highlighting industry news and corporate partner offers.
These communication pieces are distributed to more than 1000 accommodation venues, hotels, clubs, pubs, restaurants and cafes along with political and industry representatives state wide.
The THA also have prominent social media platforms where partners can showcase their business information or good news stories.
Since 1839 the THA has worked tirelessly to support and protect the interests of hotels, accommodation providers, restaurants, clubs and cafes in our state. During that time we have gained the respect of all levels of government and the business community as the peak body who represents the hospitality industry in Tasmania. This is reflected in the THA’s membership renewal rate where in 2017 96.5% of members renewed their membership with the THA.
A partnership with the THA will continue the enhance the reputation both brands and signal a position of strength in the market for each organisation.

Throughout the year the THA hold appropriate member based meetings / events which allow for corporate partners to directly meet and promote their products and services to THA members and corporate partners.
The THA has an elected state council which consists of 15 hospitality venue operators. The state council represents 48 properties which includes the Federal Group, RACT/ RACV, The Jubb Group of properties and the Edward Bailey Capital portfolio. All THA Partners are encouraged to address the THA State Council and promote their business to this influential group.

All partners are given invitations to meet with members at THA organised events which take place throughout the calendar year.
Our partners receive full recognition as a sponsor of the industry and the Association and receive full use of the THA Logos for promotional use.
Upon request partners have the option of obtaining a soft copy of the THA member list for appropriate mail outs and contact details.
Corporate partners are encouraged to provide soft copies of company products and services to the THA which will then be distributed to the industry.
